Elizabeth Moss Galleries – Portland Old Port, Maine
The Design Challenge: To create a simple, modern, and intimate art gallery design capable of displaying an ever changing array of featured art collections.
Elizabeth Moss Galleries’ second gallery location in the heart of the Old Port was designed to exhibit a dynamic collection of original art, while reflecting the client’s desired modern and minimalistic aesthetic. Inspired by the concept of a “jewel box”, the new gallery space was planned with the intention of exhibiting artwork amidst a backdrop of elegant simplicity and contemporary styling.
Bowerbird designers selected furniture and finishes with clean lines, organic textures, and neutral tones; juxtaposing the bold hues of the displayed art pieces. Rich textiles with subtle pops of color were incorporated in the primary seating and discussion area, allowing guests to admire the art from the comfort of the chairs or sofa, while enjoying a sunny space illuminated by the gallery’s large windows.
With its desirable location in the heart of Portland’s most popular pedestrian area, this new gallery space needed to be bright, airy, welcoming, and easy to explore. Bowerbird created a fresh and contemporary art gallery design which prioritized the client’s desired vision while showcasing the artwork in a thoughtfully planned and appointed space.
